An Affair of the Art: Silent Auction Sneak Peek!

By Michelle Lee, Development & Communications Manager

It’s hard to believe that a whole year has passed since we celebrated The Art of Cars Land at the 2013 An Affair of the Art annual benefit event. We all remember what a successful event that was. This year, we plan to top it as we feature “A Night at the Circus with Herb Ryman!” (our namesake and inspiration), where patrons will learn about the history of the circus and see some of Ryman’s most beautiful circus art.

An Affair of the Art has a long history (this is its 25th year!!)—raising millions of dollars to support the Ryman Arts’ mission—and has grown tremendously through the years. 2014 is my fourth year working on the event. When I first joined the Ryman Arts team in the summer of 2011, I was plunged into the busy months that led up to the 2011 Affair. I had no idea what a treat I was in for and what a huge production this signature art show and sale would be. Months and months of planning take place and countless components come together to present An Affair of the Art each year… Just in these few years alone, I have seen this fundraising event evolve greatly—a live student class demonstration was added to allow guests a peek into a Ryman Arts class, the sponsorship program has become more robust (thank you, Sponsors!), we now have over 500 artworks and jewelry pieces from 82 artists, the Edison Downtown joined in to provide libations and additional fun… and a silent auction of experiences and one-of-a-kind items has since been added! I especially remember our bidders’ enthusiastic energy and excitement as they crowded around the silent auction table when it came to a close at last year’s event. Entertaining and lively, the auction helped to raise an additional $11,000 thanks to our generous in-kind donors and happy bidders. Now, back by popular demand, here’s a sneak peak at some of this year’s silent auction experiences and items (full descriptions and photos will be added this week!):

  • Flying Trapeze Class at Hollywood Aerial Arts for a Private Group of 10
  • An Explorer Safari with Malibu Wines for Two
  • Four Preferred Seating tickets to the Rose Parade plus parking
  • Garner Holt Productions behind-the-scenes tour, given by Garner Holt himself
  • Bourbon Tasting plus delicious food for six guests at the Edison
  • Classical Tuesday Hollywood Bowl Garden Box seats
  • Tour of Disneyland plus VIP World of Color Viewing with Bob Gurr
  • Admission for four to the members-only Magic Castle
  • One-of-a-kind Circus Train Car: concept design by Disney Legend Bob Gurr and built by Garner Holt Productions, specially-made for this year’s An Affair of the Art photo-op corner.
  • Signed Annie Leibovitz Books: A Photographer’s Life and American Music
  • Limited Edition, Signed Print of the Walt Disney Birthplace by Disney artist and Imagineer Karen Armitage
  • Not-Yet-Released Marc Davis and Tinker Bell: An Evolution books, singed by Alice Davis and Mindy Johnson
  • One-of-a-kind artworks created at the event by Ryman Arts Master Teaching Artist, Kaleeka Bond, and Ryman Arts students in the student class demonstration

One thing that remains the same, year-after-year, is that the event is made possible by great efforts put forth by staff, Board Members, supporters, friends, sponsors, and volunteers. It is a truly remarkable team effort that amazes everyone. I hope to see all of you at the event, and of course, at the silent auction table—bidding begins at 5 pm!

*Update, 9/22/14: Thank You, everyone, who participated in An Affair of the Art... and a Special Thanks to all silent auction donors, bidders, and Silent Auction Volunteer, Jules! The silent auction helped raise an additional $7,200+ to support the young artists of Ryman Arts. Check out photos from the event at our Ryman Arts facebook page!
