Bluez Express will take the stage at Power Up!

By Shannon Huang, Development & Communications Manager

Bluez Express will take the stage for Power Up - Ryman Arts' 25th Anniversary. This quintet is unique not just for their creative take on the blues, but they are also all current or former Disney Imagineers! Having them as a part of our 25th Anniversary is fitting as we honor Ryman Arts co-founders Disney Legend Marty Sklar & Leah Sklar.

Bluez Express

Born in the backwoods at the crossroads of the Delta /Memphis /Chicago blues, The Bluez Express brings a soul-stirring, rolling blues party to special events and private affairs cross the Southland.

A tight band performing gigs together for years, this quintet brings a different take on the blues. “We love all kinds of blues, whether it’s an R&B classic like ‘Mustang Sally’, Bobby Troup’s ‘Route 66’, or the Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’”, says guitar man and vocalist Jonny “the Greek” Leonoudakis. “We even dig countrified blues, like Merle Haggard’s ‘Working Man Blues’. Of course, we love us some B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Lonnie Mack, and Buddy Guy, too. It’s all good stuff!” “We got our start playing gigs at Disney company events, then brought our brand of the blues to gallery openings, block parties, and special events like the city of Burbank’s Centennial bash,” says drummer Joe “Tubs” Lanzisero.

The Bluez Express is a five man band of brothers preaching the gospel of the blues, be they hot and fast, or down and dirty. The Express features the mighty harmonica of “Deep Dish” Chicago Pete Leber, a man who takes no prisoners when it comes to blowing the Mississippi saxophone. Soul man Ted Robledo tickles the ivories and serves up the blues with his own blend of spicy and seductive vocals. The rhythm section is held down by bassist “Big Bruce” Johnson, who makes the tunes pop, and adds baritone vocals cooler than the other side of the pillow. Add the groovalicious guitar of “Jonny the Greek”and the rhythm of percussive potentate “Tubs”, and you’ve got a serious blues party on your hands. It all comes down to one thing: It Ain’t Nuthin’ but the Blues!
